She's pictured here with her latest model the Salsa Vaya 2, last month it was a new Salsa Fargo! It just makes us wonder what she's gonna get next month! Tracy is not a bike collector, she rides these bikes in events such as the Dirty Kanza in Kansas a 200 mile dirt road race and the Leadville 100 mile mountain bike race in Colorado! She owns and operates an electrical engineering firm full time and is going to be a new mother in this new year of 2012! Not to mention she had to have her gall bladder removed a few weeks ago. So if you think you're busy and gettin' stuff done, just know that Tracy has got you covered!

Check out the 2012 18" Karate Monkey we have up at the shop. It's made from custom 4130 CroMoly steel tubing making the frame and fork, butted where it matters to provide a durable yet resilient ride. The seat tube is curved forward, allowing the rear wheel to tuck under, shortening the wheelbase and increasing rear wheel traction. The crank height provides plenty of ground clearance. The rear “dropouts” are horizontal rear-load style, but with a derailleur hanger.

4th Annual Texas Custom Bike Show

Local Fort Worth custom bike builder Jeremy Shlachter, of Gallus Cycles will be at the 4th Annual Texas Custom Bike show on October 15th and 16th. The event will take place at the Austin Convention center from 10am-5pm.

Jeremy has built a sweet, custom, orange travel grinder for Doug that has been shown at the NAHB, and been featured in Popular Mechanics, and Dirt Rag magazines. He's also just completed an ice blue 650B for Rick, that will be on display at the show.

Moots Vamoots with Reynolds Tubulars and WTB Devo Saddle

In anticipation of my day off today, I installed some Reynolds 66 tubulars and a WTB Devo saddle on my Moots before leaving the shop. The weather was perfect with a slight south breeze when I left the house for my ride. I immediately noticed that the wheels rolled faster than my stock ones especially when going straight into the wind. My daily wheelset consists of Campy Record hubs on Mavic Reflex tubulars with butted spokes and Challenge tires. Great comfy and durable wheels but not as free rolling as the Reynolds tubulars. I did feel a pretty good push on the front wheel in cross winds but nothing I couldn't get used too. Overall, a great ride and I'm gonna be bummed to take them off.

Lately I've been on a mission to find a saddle that is compatible with my 47 year old increasingly saggy anatomy. My old standby Fizik Aliante just wasn't working anymore. I think I nailed it with the WTB Devo saddle. I could comfortably ride for miles on end in the saddle without pain or numbness! I already have one of these on my Orbea Alma MTB but wasn't sure it would work on the road. The Devo is now my saddle of choice. I guess I should mention that we have a Reynolds wheel rental program and a saddle demo program that consists of WTB, Fizik and Cobb saddles. Ride On.

Soma B-Side first ride

Finally got all the parts together, got my Soma finished, and went for a shakedown ride at Gateway today. After getting a good feel for the bike on the first lap I made a few small adjustments to the seat and bar angles. Second lap everything felt dialed except for tire pressure so I dropped down to about 30psi and on the third lap everything was perfect. The 650b x 2.0 tires are a great compromise between 26 and 29ers, still rolling over stuff better than a 26 and easier to get through tight turns and back up to speed than the 29's. The thing that impressed me most though was the Soma Clarence bars I used on a whim. With the exact right sweep and width I'm sorry I haven't tried them before now.

XTR upgrade on Moots MootoX

Good customer and friend James Sanchez recently upgraded his Moots MootoX to 2012 Shimano XTR 2x10. This is my new favorite MTB group. The shifting is flawless ans the brakes are incredible. Of course the Moots frame that the parts are hung on is no slouch. The frame is three years old and will last long enough to see several other groupo changes. We now have the ZTR Crest 29er stock wheelset in stock in both black and white for $540.00 a set. This wheelset makes a great upgrade for your stock 29er. With Stan's bead socket technology you can run tubeless technology with low pressures and no tire burping. At 175 lbs I have been using the Crest rim for a solid year with no flats or tire burping (tire pressure 28psi). I also reccommend adding some Stan's sealant for safe measure. Stan's published weight is 1575 grams per pair.

There has been a whole lot of Moots action up at the shop lately and Aubrey has been busy building up some of the sweetest Ti bikes we've seen going out the door.

First up is Jack Stinnet's VaMoots RSL. It weighs in at 15.9 lbs and is equipped with a custom Moots seatpost and Campy Super Record Ti shifters, brakes, derailleurs, and cranks. This bike will be complete once it has it's custom Moots stem.

2011 Salsa El Mariachi 29er

So Colonel did a blog on this bike a while back, but this hardtail has really caught my eye and is totally worthy of another shout out. The El Mariachi 29er offers up a solid ride that is nimble on tight switchbacks and super stable on fast descents. It's an all around great bike for someone who's looking for a steel frame hardtail for under two grand. Salsa calls the color of this frame "Charcoal Briquette". Don't let the name fool you though, the color is far from plain. It has an awesome metallic finish that sparkles in the sun.

Surly Steamroller

Surly makes a sweet fixie called the Steamroller. While the frameset hasn't changed much over time, they do offer a different color choice each year. This year's shade is called......wait for it.........Meth Teeth. Despite the devious imagry that name may conjure in your mind, the Grey/Green color of the frame is sharp!

Here is what Surly has to say about their Steamroller:

"Listen to veteran fixed gear riders long enough and they’ll start to wax philosophic about fixies, how the bike is an extension of one’s body, how the simplicity and the silence are pleasing to the senses, how riding one is at first unnerving and later addictive. As we have said since we introduced the Steamroller frameset, we won’t try to convince you that riding ‘fixed’ is better or special or why you should try it. You’ll have to determine that for yourself. But whether you’re old school or new hat, you’d be hard pressed to find a better canvas to build your ideal street machine.

Orbea Alma Carbon 29er

Ok, I have been riding the Carbon Alma 29 for four months and am still loving it. The bike is light, solid feeling and still fast in the twisty Texas single track. The Continental Race King 2.2 tires run without tubes at 28psi provide the perfect amount of traction and slight suspension. The relatively short chainstays make it accelerate like a 26" wheel and the 100mm travel fork soaks up all the bumps. We have a medium Alma S30 with the new Shimano XT 3x10 in stock. Humbled by the Red River Riot

For the last two months I've been preparing for this ride. I've done rides of 70-80 miles every weekend with rides of 25-30 miles during the week. Some of the longer rides being as much as 40% gravel. But nothing I did prepared me for the hills that the Red River Valley had to dish out. Kevin had said he wanted the course to be as scenic and tough as possible and I think he succeeded on both counts. I went in feeling pretty fit and ready but found myself pushing my bike up several hills that were extremely long and crazy steep. Maybe I rode too hard the week before; maybe I could've run thinner/lighter tires; maybe I was carrying more gear than I needed; but after 68 miles of gravel, wind, and hills I was done. I never really thought I could pull off the full 130 mile route but I was pretty sure I could handle 100, boy was I wrong. I was happy to finish the 68 mile leg and more than happy to call it a day at that point. I'll definitely give it another shot next year, better prepared with the lessons I learned from this year, and a goal in mind of completing the entire distance.

Dave Regier is an amputee cyclist who has been riding for six years and has been a customer of Colonel's from the beginning. He has ridden over 24,000 miles on his Moots Mootour and is undertaking a significant challenge and wants to ask for your help.

He has been chosen to ride in the Million Dollar Challenge as one of the disabled riders for the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF was started by a high level Triathlete who was injured in an accident and is now competing in sports from a wheelchair. CAF's focus is providing funds to other disabled individuals who want to compete in athletics but do not have the support or funds to do so. The Million Dollar Challenge is their major fundraiser of the year. If you want to see more about the foundation and their activities throughout the country, go to www.challengedathletes.org .

On October 15, 2011 Dave will start from San Francisco and ride to San Diego in seven days (620 miles) with 100 able bodied cyclists and 6-10 disabled riders. It will be a very challenging ride to complete but well worth riding and raising funds for the CAF.

2011 Salsa Vaya/ 65Ob Salsa Vaya

So I loved the 2010 Vaya I had as a demo so much that when it sold I immediately bought myself the 2011 with Sram Apex. The first pic shows it stock except for the Lizard Skins bar tape, the Dean Ti seat post (a Colonel's heirloom passed on from Colonel to Sully to me), and my WTB Devo saddle. The second pic shows it set up with 650b Pacenti Quasi-Moto 2" tires. One of my favorite rides these days is riding the gravel out to Gateway park, doing a couple loops of the mtb trail, and then riding home. This set up knocks it out of the park.

Ahearne Cycle Truck-Suited and Booted

I'm a little tardy with this post (Sorry Richard, Joseph, Tripp) but, Richard Chambers's Ahearne Cycle Truck Ku$tom is finished. Richard "borrowed" his Ahearne before I finished installing and wiring the lights, etc., to go for a ride with the Adventure Cycling guys when they were in town a few weeks ago and afterward dropped it off at the shop to be completed. The bike turned out great and Richard was kind enough to have the Colonel's Bicycles logo placed on the bike's signage. Joseph Ahearne and his guys are pros and the Cycle Truck frameset showed up on time and built up without any issues whatsoever. That combined with Richard's spreadsheet build list and patience made this a fun project. As always, the build (Richard Proof) consisted of parts from Brooks, Busch and Muller, Chris King, Rohloff, Surly, Sykes Wood, etc. With custom mounts finished and the two 12 volt B&M dynos mounted, the Ahearne was ready for delivery. Oh yeah, for those of you with a wood fetish, that's blonde bamboo.

Spring my friend, where are you? Oh well, at least we got out for 2+hours last night before our latest round of this stuff. Sully's back on and the Lerbergs, aka the Hansens (from the movie Slapshot, not the band), showed. Kocian was on his Salsa Con Crosso and yours truly rode the '91 B'stone. With more and more people discovering the dirt/gravel road thing, I can see the Tuesday Nighter evolving in to a ride you won't want to miss. So, get out your cross bike, old road bike, 29er, monster crosser, 650b, rando, porteur, touring bike, singlespeed, multispeed, put on your lights, and show up. Here at Colonel's the traditional Cycle Cross bikes seem to get overlooked in the midst of all the mountain, road, hybrid, cruiser and tri-bikes. A cross bike is probably the only bike you can leave your house on, ride the road to the mountainbike trail, do a couple of laps and then ride home on! Classic Steel Moots

Check out this classic steel Moots! Chances are that most people have never seen a steel Moots since they now build exclusively with Titanium. Not only is this frame Steel but it was built for Andy Hamptsen in 1989. The bottom bracket is stamped with 3/11/89 Ham. Here is a little Hampsten history:
Andy Hampsten was born on April 7, 1962.

Hampsten was the first American to win the Giro d’Italia.

Hampsten won the 1988 Giro d’Italia in front of Erik Breukink of Holland and Urs Zimmermann of Switzerland.

Hampsten also won the Mountains Jersey that year in the Giro d'Italia as well.

In addition, Hampsten was 3rd in the 1989 Giro d’Italia behind Laurent Fignon of France and Flavio Giupponi of Italy.

In non-Cycling Hall of Fame.com events, Hampsten won the Tour of Switzerland in 1986 and 1987.

The frame now belongs to local firefighter and Colonel's customer Kurt Howard. The frame was repainted by Southwest Frame Works in 2009. Soon to be built and ridden as a single speed. Feel free to come by the shop and take a look.

Holiday greetings from the fellas at Colonel's! As you can see, Santa was good to us and sent dozens of shiny new Christmas bikes for us to transfer from our tree to yours!
